The Department of Geosciences at Mississippi State University invites applications for a Department Head at the rank of Professor. This is a 12-month appointment to begin July 1, 2014, salary commensurate with
experience. The successful candidate will provide leadership to the Department’s programs in undergraduate and graduate education and research. The Department Head will hold a faculty position in the Department of Geosciences.

The Department Head will be expected to guide all sub-disciplines (Geography, Geology, Geospatial Sciences, and Meteorology) and distance learning programs of Geosciences towards greater national and
international research and educational recognition. The successful candidate will be expected to attract and mentor the highest quality faculty, strengthen the existing Ph.D., M.S., and B.S. degree programs, and expand the department’s interdisciplinary research activities. The Department Head will also oversee daily departmental functions and work with the College of Arts & Sciences and alumni to
attract funds and resources.

The successful candidate is expected to have strong leadership qualities. A commitment to collegiality in the Department is very important in this interdisciplinary program. The candidate should serve as an advocate for the department at the college and university levels with regard to departmental programs and initiatives in all sub-disciplines of Geosciences.


Job Requirements:
The successful candidate for this position will have an earned Ph.D. in geosciences or a related field, with academic achievements consistent with appointment as a full professor with tenure. Applicants should have a high record of research productivity, teaching credentials, student mentorship, and external funding. Demonstrated leadership and administrative skills and a vision for advancing an interdisciplinary department of geosciences are expected from the successful candidate. Preferred qualifications include
knowledge of, or experience with distance learning course delivery as well as research interests that will strengthen, build, or bridge existing programs in Geosciences.

The Department of Geosciences currently has 16 tenure-track faculty members and 8 instructors. The department offers B.S. and M.S. degrees in Geosciences and a Ph.D. degree in Earth and Atmospheric Science within five areas of emphasis: Environmental Geosciences, Geography, Geology, Geospatial Sciences, and Meteorology. In addition to the on-campus programs, our distance learning programs enroll more than 500 undergraduate and graduate students.
